Five Project Highlights
The OTS team has been busy over the last few months, and we’d love share some of the highlights from our recent projects.
Rarely are two fuel storage solutions ever the same. Each site comes with its own concerns and goals such as achieving sustainability or improving on-site fuel security, and every project is unique. OTS are proud to be able to meet the unique demands of each project by adopting an innovative and versatile approach to designing and installing state-of-the-art bespoke fuel storage and dispensing solutions.
Below are 5 projects that showcase the very best of OTS design engineering and craftsmanship as well as the commitment of the OTS team to meet our clients’ needs.
HS2 Site 1 Bowsers
When completed, HS2 will be Britain’s first high speed rail link connecting London to Scotland via Manchester and Birmingham. Our work on the HS2 project has been extensive (and a full case study will be forthcoming in 2023), but for now, we’d like to talk bowsers.
OTS were tasked with designing and installing a fuel storage and dispensing system capable of refuelling the 5,000L bowsers that are responsible for transporting diesel and AdBlue around the site and are therefore crucial for the running of operations. OTS were able to fulfil this goal, providing a fuel management and transfer system fit for bulk fuel loading of 300-400 litres per minute.
OTS are proud to be helping fuel the HS2 site and facilitate the operations of the largest infrastructure project in Europe. Stay tuned for more on this project, and in the interim, why not watch one of the tanks being craned in!
Newport Bus AVI & Site Upgrade
Newport Bus is responsible for providing bus links across the city of Newport and with a large vehicle fleet it is important that the buses can refuel quickly and efficiently in order to remain on schedule. As refuelling occurs on-site, ensuring a high level of fuel security was another primary concern for Newport Bus.
To meet these objectives, OTS repositioned the existing on-site refuelling station to allow for more efficient use of the dispensing pumps, a fuel management system was fitted to monitor stock levels, fuel usage and more, and an automated vehicle identification (AVI) system was implemented which not only increases speed through the pump, saving driver time, but prevents unrecognised vehicles from re-fuelling, helping to prevent fuel theft and misuse.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! A Refurbished Tank for O’Connor Utilities
As one of the UK’s leading utilities companies, O’Connor Utilities requires a significant amount of fuel to run operations over dozens of construction sites and depot locations across the UK.
For this site upgrade project, O’Connor Utilities requested a complete refurbishment of their original fuel storage and dispensing tank. Whilst not our typical client brief, OTS are happy to offer a tank refurbishment service as a green alternative that can also be quicker and cheaper than a new tank.
In addition to the tank refurb, we installed a brand-new fuel management system with automatic vehicle identification technology helping OCU improve fuel security.

Western Fuel Cylindrical Tanks
Western Fuel supply both commercial and domestic heating oil, serving a range of industries across the UK including agricultural, marine and industrial. Being involved in the running of so many UK industries and offering same day delivery means it’s vital that Western Fuel can transport their product reliably and efficiently.
OTS were tasked with installing fuel storage tanks responsible for fuelling Western Fuel’s vehicle fleet. For this project the client requested that the tanks be cylindrical to fit with their other re-fuelling sites. Although OTS are more well-known for our rectangular tanks, we were happy to meet this client’s specifications and source the cylindrical tanks requested to complete this project.
Now with the completion of their new fuel storage tank installation Western Fuel can confidently carry out their deliveries knowing that their vehicle fleet will run smoothly.
Plymouth Fisheries Fuel Transfer System
Plymouth Fisheries is located at Sutton Harbour and is viewed by many as one of the most important fisheries in the UK. Sustaining over 600 jobs, both directly and indirectly through the supply chain, it’s vital that Plymouth Fisheries fuel system runs efficiently.
When the original fuel storage system was designed, there was an expectation that both tanks would be depleted at a similar rate. As we sometimes find, expectations can differ from realities in the field, and systems can require adaptation. The challenge faced at Plymouth Fisheries was that one of the tanks was being rarely used and efficient stock rotation was a primary concern. To fix this, OTS installed a fuel transfer system that ensures efficient stock management and zero fuel waste.
With the new fuel transfer system, fuel can be pumped from the secondary fuel tank to the primary fuel tank as and when needed to ensure re-fuelling is easy and reliable. Although the transfer system is turned on manually, its functions run automatically. The transfer of fuel from one tank to the other is managed on a pre-set timer and refills are triggered by stock level sensors in either tank, these sensors also prevent over and under filling.
Now with their new fuel transfer system, Plymouth Fisheries can make the most out of the fuel they’ve got, and refuelling is quick and easy. Also, with any potential issues of fuel leaks or contamination fuel can be easily transported from one tank to the other to ensure minimal fuel wastage.
