Expert fuel tank decommissioning services by OTS: experience, knowledge, and commitment to excellence

Tank decommissioning services: safe, responsible, and compliant solutions

When fuel tanks reach the end of their useful life, or the need for them no longer exists, tank decommissioning becomes an essential task. The process must be managed carefully to minimise potential environmental risks and ensure compliance with local and national regulations. At OTS, we offer comprehensive fuel tank decommissioning services that focus on safety, environmental responsibility, and legal compliance (read our article on The 3 Reasons Businesses Should ALWAYS Prioritise Safety When Decommissioning Tanks).

Why choose OTS for fuel tank decommissioning?

With over 40 years’ experience, OTS is a leader in the field of tank decommissioning. Our team comprises industry experts with in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in handling complex decommissioning projects. From initial surveying to environmental clean-up, we ensure every stage of the process is carried out to the highest industry standards.

  • Our comprehensive industry knowledge, extensive experience, and dedication to safe and compliant practices make OTS the first choice for your tank decommissioning needs.

Our engineers are trained to evaluate the fuel tank's condition thoroughly, identify any potential hazards, and determine the most efficient and safe method for decommissioning.

  • As a testament to our commitment to excellence, OTS has a Waste Licensed Facility, holding an Environment Agency Waste Management Licence (EA WML86076). This licence permits us to process and store decommissioned tanks. Our commitment to legal compliance is further demonstrated by our Waste Carriers Licence, which ensures we are legally equipped to transport decommissioned tanks.

  • We also continuously invest in new plant and equipment, including a Petroleum Regulated Vacuum tanker and a new crane (HIAB) lorry, to maintain our industry-leading position.

The tank decommissioning process

  • We kickstart the process with a thorough survey of the fuel tank and its environment to understand its condition and identify potential hazards.

  • The fuel tank is completely drained, and an extensive cleaning process follows to eliminate any residual fuel and vapours. We utilise industry-approved cleaning methods and cutting-edge equipment to ensure the safety of our team and the public. As Registered Dealers in Controlled Oils, we can trade in Gas Oil and Kerosine to permitted users, this gives OTS a unique advantage in that we can provide “End to End” service when decommissioning Above Ground Storage Tanks (ASTs)

  • We ensure proper ventilation to dissipate any residual fuel vapours, strictly adhering to safety standards.

  • Depending upon the initial inspection and risk assessment, we may choose for in-situ decommissioning (filling the tank with an inert solid material) or tank removal. Tanks can be cut up either on site for removal or removed whole and processed at our Waste Disposal site in Gloucestershire.

  • Following the decommissioning, the tank is securely loaded and transported while adhering to the ADR Regulations for the safe transportation of dangerous goods.

  • As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we ensure decommissioned tanks and waste materials are disposed of correctly and recycled wherever feasible.

  • After tank decommissioning, we undertake site restoration to return the area to its original condition or prepare it for future use.

  • While a de-gas certificate is not explicitly required, we believe in going the extra mile for our clients. We can obtain a de-gas certificate from a reputable professional organisation to ensure your peace of mind, underlining that we have taken appropriate measures to minimise risks.

  • At OTS, we understand the complex regulations governing tank decommissioning. Our team is well-versed in these rules and ensures that all our procedures comply with the relevant guidelines, including The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 and the guidelines issued by the Environment Agency.
