Powering the Backbone of Digital Infrastructure: How OTS is Reinventing Fuel Storage and Monitoring for Data Centres

As demand for data centres continues to rise with the growth of AI, cloud computing, and global connectivity, so too does the need for robust and reliable backup power infrastructure. At OTS Group, we understand that when it comes to uptime, there’s no room for compromise, and fuel management is no exception.

Rethinking Fuel Storage for a Critical Industry

In March, Shaun & Neil attended the Data Centre World Conference at Excel London. With hundreds of vendors and thousands of industry professionals in attendance, the event highlighted just how rapidly the data centre sector is evolving, especially in the areas of software, infrastructure, and power distribution.

While much of the conversation focused on emerging digital technologies, there was a clear and growing recognition of the vital role physical infrastructure plays in enabling continuity.

Fuel Storage Solutions Built for Data Centre Environments

At OTS, we’ve been working closely with data centre clients to provide fuel storage systems that go far beyond the tank for a number of years now. Our approach is to deliver fully integrated solutions that are tailored to each site’s specific requirements, whether it’s a hyperscale facility or a smaller installation.

Key innovations include:

  • Advanced Monitoring with PLC Integration
Our tanks now feature Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), offering clients flexible, scalable control across multiple tanks, all from a single controller if needed. These industrial-grade systems are robust, reliable, and designed for continuous operation in demanding environments.

  • Remote Fuel Quality Monitoring
We've developed a cutting-edge system that allows operators to monitor fuel quality, temperature, density, and water content in real time, remotely. This ensures optimal fuel conditions are maintained at all times, protecting generators from costly damage and improving lifecycle performance.

  • Redundancy-Ready, Modular Design
Data centres demand resilience, which is why we offer a modular design approach. Clients can choose the level of system redundancy that suits their operational model, from single-tank setups to multi-tank farms with centralised control.

  • Temperature-Controlled Tank Solutions
For clients in colder climates, such as Finland, we’re supplying clad tanks with integrated heaters to maintain fuel at precise temperatures. This is especially critical when working with biodiesel blends that can become unstable or waxy in low temperatures.

  • Reliable Overflow Prevention
We use advanced dead-stop overflow prevention valves that minimise risk and reduce maintenance, ideal for installations with limited access or stringent compliance standards.

  • Remote Monitoring Solution (RMS)
Our RMS technology ensures uninterrupted data connectivity by using IoT SIM cards with automatic multi-network failover. After a successful rollout across 10 Tesco sites, we’ve seen zero downtime at upgraded sites, a real success that is now implemented as standard in our RMS setups.

A Trusted Partner for Data Centre Resilience

We’re proud to support data centre clients with intelligent, low-maintenance, and highly reliable fuel storage & management systems that are designed to meet the demands of modern infrastructure. Whether it’s optimising performance, enhancing visibility, or improving resilience, our solutions help clients stay ahead of the curve in a fast-changing industry.

We’ll be back at Data Centre World 2026, where we’ll be showcasing our certified tanks and launching new developments tailored to the needs of this evolving sector. Until then, we’ll keep doing what we do best, powering the backbone of digital infrastructure!
