Find out how OTS are helping to supply UK industries with HVO and achieve Net Zero

If this summer has shown us anything, it’s that global warming is real. As players in the liquid fuel industry, we have to take responsibility for what we are helping to put on the market.

Emissions of greenhouse gases are causing global temperatures to rise, damaging the planet and natural habitats. Floods, fires and droughts are becoming increasingly common and unfortunately unless something changes, these will only become more frequent.

Thankfully, the UK is responding to this environmental crisis by committing to Net Zero which sets out the target for all UK industries to become carbon neutral by 2050. This may seem like an ambitious goal, but progress has already been made and there have been impressive advancements in finding sustainable fuel alternatives.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, commonly known as HVO, is a popular low-carbon alternative fuel which can be derived from waste products including vegetable oils and animal fats.

The main environmental benefit of HVO is its considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, including up to 90% less carbon dioxide and 27% less nitrogen oxide emissions. Not only this, but as HVO fuel (like GD+) can be made from waste products, it is sustainable, renewable, non-toxic and biodegradable.

But HVO doesn’t just offer environmental benefits! Here are some of the many additional benefits of HVO:

  1. The long storage life of HVO makes it the perfect fuel for buying in bulk to help mitigate against the effects of fuel cost volatility and supply chain disruptions. HVO fuel can be stored for up to 10 years whilst requiring little to no fuel maintenance.

  2. HVO fuel is better for vehicles, plant and storage tanks than traditional diesel. For example, as HVO fuel does not react with water or oxygen, it means that this fuel is less likely to become contaminated and damage your storage tank or machinery.

  3. HVO is an ideal drop-in alternative to traditional diesel. Because HVO can be used interchangeably with diesel in most vehicles, it doesn’t require engine modifications.

HVO Fuel tank solutions

At OTS, we are committed to HVO. In partnership with Green Bio Fuels, the UK’s leading provider of HVO, we are determined to do everything we can to help bring HVO to the market in a meaningful sense, and we are therefore working hard to make HVO storage solutions available across as many truckstops, sites and depots as we can across the UK.

We are proud to offer state-of-the-art bespoke HVO fuel dispensing and storage tanks which are designed to be reliable and easily maintained. Details of these tanks can be found below:

Steel HVO Tanks

Our steel tanks can be set up as storage only (for sites where existing external pumps exist) or as dispensing solutions. Our HVO tanks are bunded and can come fitted with all the equipment needed to store, measure and dispense HVO or HVO diesel blends. If required, these tanks can come with optional add-ons, including hose reels, flowmeters and Fuel Management Systems. These tanks also come in a wide range of capacities, from 1,350L to 140,000L.

Plastic HVO Tanks

OTS’ Polyethylene ‘plug and play’ (or drop-in) fuel storage options provide a safe and secure option to refuel vehicles and plant, at any location with a 240-volt supply or 12-volt option for remote locations. The bunded tank comes with a lockable distribution cabinet, housing the fill connection, filter, meter & delivery nozzle. Plastic tanks can also be equipped with Fuel Management Systems.

The time for change is now and OTS are committed to helping the UK achieve Net Zero by 2050. Get in touch to start the process of upgrading your fuel storage for the future.
